CITY COMEDY CLUB BLOG

A Brief History of Comedy Clubs in London (And Where to Laugh Today)

9/29/2025

London is one of the comedy capitals of the world. From smoky music halls in the 19th century to packed basements in Shoreditch, the city has always known how to deliver a punchline. If you’re looking for a night out filled with belly laughs, it helps to know how London’s comedy culture evolved — and where you can catch the best stand-up today.

The Early Days: Music Halls to Stand-Up
Comedy in London didn’t begin with stand-up. In the 1800s, music halls dominated the entertainment scene. Acts combined song, dance, and cheeky humour, giving workers a much-needed release. These venues laid the groundwork for the joke-slinging comedians of today.

The 1980s: Alternative Comedy Takes Over
The alternative comedy movement exploded in the 1980s. At The Comedy Store, opened in 1979, legends like Rik Mayall, French & Saunders, Alexei Sayle, and Paul Merton reshaped British humour. Suddenly, comedy wasn’t just about one-liners — it was political, surreal, and unafraid to challenge the status quo.

London’s Comedy Clubs Today
Today, London’s comedy scene is thriving, with clubs across the city offering everything from intimate open mics to big-name headliners. Some of the most iconic include:
  • 🎤 Top Secret Comedy Club – Known for affordable tickets and surprise drop-ins from household names (yes, even the likes of Chris Rock and Kevin Hart have tested material here).
  • 🎤 99 Club – A West End favourite, regularly hosting award-winning comedians in slick, central venues.
  • 🎤 Up the Creek – A Greenwich institution since the 1990s, famed for its wild late-night shows and rowdy, fun-loving crowds.
  • 🎤 Backyard Comedy Club – Bethnal Green’s large, modern comedy hub, set up by Lee Hurst, offering everything from pro stand-up to quirky themed nights.
  • 🎤 The Comedy Café (RIP) – Once a Shoreditch staple in the 90s and 2000s, this cult club helped launch major acts before closing its doors.
Each of these venues adds its own flavour to London’s comedy culture, proving there’s no shortage of laughs in the capital.

The New Chapter: City Comedy Club, Shoreditch
And then there’s City Comedy Club London — one of the newest and most exciting names in the game. Founded in 2018, the club carries the spirit of The Comedy Café while putting its own stamp on Shoreditch nightlife.
📍 Located in the Trapeze Bar, just 1 minute from Old Street Station, it’s easy to get to from all over London.
🎟️ Known for being the best-value comedy in central London, with tickets starting as low as £5.
😂 Hosting world-class comedians and celebrity mystery guests who’ve appeared on Taskmaster, Live at the Apollo, 8 Out of 10 Cats, Mock the Week, and the Joe Rogan Podcast.

City Comedy Club is proof that Shoreditch is still a comedy hotspot. Whether you’re after a date night, a team outing, or just some much-needed midweek laughter, this club is quickly becoming a must-visit destination.

✨ From The Comedy Store to City Comedy Club, London’s comedy history is still being written. Why not be part of the next chapter?

We had a great night overall! The sets were nice, the MC was good and the drinks were not that expensive (due to happy hour). Definitely recommended!

An amazing show.the acts were short, crisp and hilarious. The size of the crowd meant that the artists could interact with the crowd actively and the location was amazing. Me and my friend loved the whole show and would highly recommend this after a good long hard day's work!!
